Rev. Sharpton takes on Don Imus on his reckless remarks

Rev. Al Sharpton has called for the firing of radio host Don Imus after he referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team as "nappy headed hos" on his morning radio show, Imus in the Morning.

Central to Rev. Sharpton's argument seems to be the fact that it is not just a case of reckless misstatement by an otherwise responsible TV celebrity. It is a case of Don Imus slinging such insults for bolstering his brand as a "shock jock" TV host.

Dont you think this is not a case of Free Speech but simply a disgusting case of Mr. Imus insulting a group of women for no reasons other than for improving his ratings and for fostering his brand as a shock-jock?

Does this not come across as For Profit Speech in its worst exploitary form?

Apologies.

Where was Al Sharpton's apology for the Brawley case? Not only did he not apologize for the slander and defamation of character to Mr. Pagones, he lost the lawsuit brought against him and hasn't paid it yet. (Or if he did, it has not been reported). I just find this a little bit too faced for anybody who I might consider voting for in any presidential election. You can't have it just your way. That is why Al Sharpton will never be president.

Sharpton is a HYPOCRITE

Posted by: fatboy03 at 2007-04-12

Obviously Imus was out of line with his remarks however, they were made as part of a comedy sketch -

My question is why is it you only speak out against issues when Caucasians (white is not a color) are involved ?

Black comedians, black musicians, etc,etc...make "whitey & cracker" jokes all the time .. Blacks constantly poke fun at white Americans ..Why is that acceptable to you & the reverse is not?

This is America Mr.Sharpton .. Freedom of speech is a Constitutional right & not one for you or the black community to manipulate any & every time you don't like something!

If you truly want to appear as a "leader" than stop being a hypocrite & catering to only one racial group . your own! You come across like "Mr. Perfect" yet your own closet contains many "skeletons" ..Why not speak out against injustice universally instead of selectively?

Do you think that black America is the only racial group with problems?

Do you honestly believe that the racial imbalance that existed in the 40's,50's, and 60's is the status quo today?

Do you think it fair and / or just that in today's America, Black people can say think & do anything they want without responsibility or accountability? If so, why? what makes Black America "special" or more important that any & all other racial groups that make up this great land?

The "America owes us" excuse is old & worn thin..slavery ended almost two hundred years ago & the only ones using that excuse are people who refuse to become part of the solution & need an excuse for their personal short comings & failures...

Since the time of the Civil War & even before, many people of color achieved & excelled because they chose to over come social stereotypes & make THEIR OWN WAY in the World, and not blame the "system" for their inability & laziness ...

Sir, I propose you either stand universally, and equally for ALL people's or you simply SHUT UP and stop being a public buffoon!

America owes your community NOTHING sir .. If America "owes" any people, it's the Native Americans.. Why don't you take up their plight Mr. Sharpton? There are also many other people in this Nation being discriminated against including Caucasians who's voice's are not heard... Why not take up their cause also Sir?

Where's your apology for demonizing the Duke LaCrosse Players? I think you should publicly apologize for your merciless slander & crucifixation of those young men - Do you recall a simple phrase of "ionnocent until proven guilty?" You Sir, tried, convicted, and hung those young men out to dry on nothing more than an accusation & hearsay .. Apologize publicly Mr.Sharpton as Don Imus has been man enough to do (You are man enough aren't you sir?)

You fancy yourself a modern day Dr.King (who was one of America's greatest leaders, and citizens) yet you fall VERY SHORT of Dr.King's dream for America... and now you bid for the Presidency when you are clearly a racist & a hypocrite? I think not sir!

Look in the mirror Mr. Sharpton before you start pointing fingers of imperfection .. Let ye without sin cast the first stone Sir!

Also, if you read your history, this is how the Third Reich (Nazi's) evolved ...

What's next Mr. Sharpton? Book burning? Imprisoning artists, musicians, teachers? Where does this battle end & how much of your crap do you think America will stand for before they plug the plug on you?

In conclusion Mr.Sharpton, it's basically time to put your money where you mouth is & stand on the same public firing line Mr.Imus had the courage to stand on ..

Put up or shut up Al ..America is watching & waiting

I registered on this site just in order to point out the absurd amount of hypocrisy the good Reverend has displayed over the last few days, but fatboy03 has already done so, and quite eloquently, I might add. Thank you, fatboy03, for putting into words these thoughts that many good Americans should be, and are, thinking.

He's fired.

Posted by: aa525 at 2007-04-12

After an immense amount of apologizing and realizing his mistake Don Imus is officially fired from CBS. I do not hold Al Sharpton directly responsible but his obnoxious way of "preaching" to the public most likely had a lot to do with it. Al Sharpton, you will never be president because you don't pick and choose your battles nor learn to become a stronger more influential speaker. Keep overreacting over things that should be let go after apologies are given. The only thing it's doing is making your bank account grow.

Thank you to Reverend Sharpton for removing Imus from the radio. Now, I would like to see him tackle the music/performing arts industry
including the performers, writers, and promoters that use this same language. When respect for women -- of all colors is established in American, then the radio waves will be free of such people as Imus. Let us start cleaning up our own backyard. Please Reverend Sharpton, show us you are truly interested in the Rutgers' womens' basketball team and remove the use of this language by ALL people.

Isaiah Washington's Image Award

Posted by: Cracker at 2007-04-12

Are you aware that Isaiah Washington (“Grey’s Anatomy” Fame) received an Image Award from the NAACP. Oh did I forget to say that the very respectable Mr. Isaiah Washington called T.R. Knight a …. F@660T. Well he went into rehab; problem solved. I guess if Don Imus were a Negro, I mean a Black, no I mean an Afro-American he could have gone to a Spa, no I mean Rehab. Then he would still have a…. J O B wouldn’t he. P.S. Do you think A. Sharpton or J. Jackson will be going to the Duke Campus to apologize?

It's not just Imus

Posted by: corporatetruth333 at 2007-04-13

The media is once again turning this back into a black issue, and yes rappers should be accountable to their corporate sponsors, and the public too, but it’s not just Don Imus, rappers, and hip-hop. What about Glenn Beck calling Hillary Clinton a “stereotypical bitch”? Neal Boortz saying, “This Muhammad guy is just a phony rag picker,” and Cynthia McKinney’s “new hair-do” makes her look “like a ghetto slut”? Rush Limbaugh saying that a contest on CBS’ Survivor was “not going to be fair if there’s a lot of water events,” suggesting that “blacks can’t swim”? In the early ‘70’s, Limbaugh told a black caller to “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back”. Bill O’Reilly argued that detaining all “Muslims between the ages of 16 and 45” for questioning “isn’t racial profiling,” but “criminal profiling.” Michael Savage called Barbara Walters a “double-talking slut,” adding, “she’s an empty mind-slut,” a “mental prostitute” and “I think that the woman is vermin. I think she’s dirt.” Savage also claimed that Sec. Of State Condoleezza Rice “was chosen by George Bush as part of an affirmative action program in order to make his Cabinet look like America.” Notice how the major media fails to mention these other white bigots? Don Imus just may have opened Pandora’s Box, and it’s about time. http://mediamatters.org/items/200704120010

Don Imus vs Isiah Washington

Posted by: FreeJamie at 2007-04-14

So let me get this straight. A white man can NOT say a derogatory comment about a black basketball team but a black man CAN say a derogatory comment about a white homosexual man? Hey Al, it is ok for one of your "own" to make derogatory comments about whites? Why are we not calling for Isiah Washington's (Gray's Anatomy star) firing when his derogaotry rants were just as offensive as Don Imus'? Ah, but alas, there is a double standard.

Imus and Sharpton

Posted by: AnnoyedWithSharpton at 2007-04-14

Personally I think all of this is rather ridiculous because we do have something called freedom of speech, if you don't like it then move somewhere else. As Dorthy Thompson once said "When liberty is taken away by force it can be restored by force. When it is relinquished voluntarily by default it can never be recovered." If you don't like freedom then yes listen to Al Sharpton and Jeese Jackson, Personally I'd rather not. I care about my rights and how I can say what I want and if you don't like it too bad. Get Imus back on the air! I don't say this because I like him because I don't even listen to him, but the fact is he was taken off the air because people like Al Sharpton can't take jokes because they are "racist". I saw it for what it was... move on and get over it... I don't even know why this forum is here because someone that complains about the freedom of speech should never be allowed to be a president of the good ol US of A!

Thanks, Matt

Imus Or Rap? The Culture of "Bitches, Hos, and Niggas" By Michelle Malkin

Let's stipulate: I have no love for Don Imus, Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. A pox on all their race-baiting houses.

Let's also stipulate: The Rutgers women's basketball team didn't deserve to be disrespected as "nappy-headed hos." No woman deserves that. I agree with the athletes that Imus's misogynist mockery was "deplorable, despicable and unconscionable." And as I noted on Fox News's "O'Reilly Factor" this week, I believe top public officials and journalists who have appeared on Imus's show should take responsibility for enabling Imus—and should disavow his longstanding invective.

But let's take a breath now and look around. Is the Sharpton & Jackson Circus truly committed to cleaning up cultural pollution that demeans women and perpetuates racial epithets?

Have you seen the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks chart this week?

The No. 1 rap track is by a new sensation who goes by the name of "Mims." The "song" is "This Is Why I'm Hot." It has topped the charts for the last 15 weeks. Here's a taste of the lyrics that young men and women are cranking up in their cars:

This is why I'm hot Catch me on the block Every other day Another bitch another drop 16 bars, 24 pop 44 songs, nigga gimme what you got . . . . . . We into big spinners See my pimping never dragged Find me wit' different women that you niggas never had For those who say they know me know I'm focused on ma cream Player you come between you'd better focus on the beam I keep it so mean the way you see me lean And when I say I'm hot my nigga dis is what I mean

Let's move down the Billboard list, shall we? The No. 2 rap track in the nation this week is by rappers Bow Wow and R. Kelly (yes, the same R. Kelly who was indicted five years ago on a raft of child-porn charges and is still awaiting trial). The "song" is called "I'm a Flirt," and it's been on the charts for 12 weeks:

Ima b pimpin I don't be slippin When it come down to these hos I don't love em We don't cuff em Man that's just the way it goes I pull up in the Phantom All the ladies think handsome Jewelry shining, I stay stuntin' That's why these niggas can't stand em Ima chick mag-a-net And anything fine I'm bag-gin it And if she got a man, I don't care 10 toes and I wanna be, cause I gotta have it

The final line:

Now the moral of the story is cuff yo chick, 'cause hey, I'm black, fresh, and I rap, plus I'm rich, and I'm a flirt

Al Sharpton, I am sure, is ready to call a press conference with the National Organization for Women to jointly protest this garbage and the radio stations and big pimpin' music companies behind it.

Or perhaps the New Civility Squad is not convinced yet that the Billboard chart toppers I've highlighted are representative? Let's proceed to No. 3 on the Billboard rap charts this week (and on the charts for the past 13 weeks): "Go Getta" by a rapper named "Young Jeezy" with a special appearance by R. Kelly (again!). Here's the "chorus":

You know we trap all day Play all night Dis Is Da Life Of A Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Yea) U In Da Club U C A Bad Bitch Point Her Out (Oh) Yea U Damn Right Ima (Ey) You Damn Right Ima Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Yea)

The No. 4 song on the Billboard Rap Tracks charts is "Throw Some D's" by "Rich Boy featuring Polow Da Don." (It's been on the charts for 18 weeks.) Here's the chorus:

Rich Boy sellin' crack F--k niggas wanna jack Sh-t tight no slack Just bought a Cadillac (Throw some D's on that bitch!) Just bought a Cadillac (Throw some D's on that bitch!) Just bought a Cadillac

The lyrical rap poet known as "Unk" has the No. 5 spot with "2 Step." On the charts for nine weeks, here's a taste of his dope rhyme:

I See You Got It Right Beat My Wrist Ice Colder Than A Bud Light Now I'm a Take My Time Where The Gangsters At And You Can Still Post The Wall Nigga Holla Back Grey Goose And Yak Blunt Filled With Kush I'm Getting Jiggy With It Smoking On That George Bush Step

And at No. 6 is "Rock Your Hips" by "Crime Mob." Here's the non-obscene part:

She rock her hips She rock her hips I like that way She rock her hips She rock her hips I like the way She rock her hips

But you can't have a hit without the n-word, of course:

Now I got 32 flavors of that bootylicious bubblegum Raspberry, grape, cherry, Come and get this honey bun Yummy-yum baby, not your ordinary lady Known to drive the niggas crazy

One dumb radio/television shock jock's insult is a drop in the ocean of barbaric filth and anti-female hatred on the radio.

Imus gets a two-week suspension. What kind of relief do we get from this deadening, coarsening, dehumanizing barrage from young, black rappers and their music industry enablers who have helped turn America into Tourette's Nation?

Shame on Al

Posted by: grapeCigarilloz at 2007-05-07

He considers himself as do others as a leader for the black community. He recently organized a March for Decency. Here is what rapper NYOIL has to say about our boy Al Sharpton.

  • Rapper NYOIL has issued a response to Reverend Al Sharpton's March for Decency, a protest of raunchy, sexist and violent Hip-Hop lyrics.

The march for decency?

I'll keep this direct and to the point.

I am a firm believer in involving myself with community action, social movements, and the political process. As a father, a man and a concerned citizen, I'm not into the idea of just allowing people to dictate where my life goes or allowing them to alter the things that impact my life. They cannot just tell me how the things that I find personally valuable shall be allocated and resourced.

Hence when my dude NES (Petroleum Empire Music Group: Promotions VP) called me and told me that Al Sharpton was organizing a "Decency March," I was compelled to get involved.

Now I am in a conflicted position for a variety of reasons that I am sure many of you may share.

First, I am an adult and, as a parent, I agree wholeheartedly that the language and images portrayed in Hip-Hop today are damaging and destructive to the minds of our children. I bare witness to this everyday in my hometown of Staten Island, NY, where I watch kids emulate lifestyles they aren't even living - until they are truly living that lifestyle. They invariably find themselves trapped in situations that they are ill-equipped to escape.

Secondly, as an MC and a devout Hip Hopper who loves the complete culture and this lifestyle. I am concerned because I can see a "lowering of the Boom " on Hip-Hop as it is being made the scapegoat for mass media's systematic corruption of our nation and people in the international community. It is being used to cloak the nefarious deeds of corporate entertainment companies and corporate radio. All the while focusing on the bad elements and further promoting them and their presence while totally ignoring artist such as an NYOIL, Wise intelligent, Immortal Technique, Little Brother, Uno the Prophet, Dead Prez, and so on. Artist that make the sort of music that these demagogues seem to be screeching for.

Finally, as an American and a concerned citizen who has a great deal of respect and understanding of the items contained in the Constitution. It feels like these movements to ban words and censor artist is a cloaked veil hiding a larger agenda to co-opt our freedom of speech. Granted in insuring our freedom of speech there is a great deal of speech that is respectfully unworthy of protection, and even if 99% of free speech is useless filth, it is for that 1% that challenges the ideas and percepts of this country and this society and in the end create the dialogue that initiates a better world for us that this right has to be protected tooth and nail.

Now this is my internal paradigm which doesn't include my personal distrust of so called Black leaders like Rev. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who at this stage in their Civil Rights careers appear to be more media whores than fighters for equality and justice for all people.

So here I am at this March for Decency, looking around for Hip Hop somewhere in here and all I could find was Kurtis Blow. (LOL) Kurtis Blow was the only Rapper besides myself that was there which was unreal to me. Where was Hip-Hop at??? Why weren't we there making our collective voices heard. Many of us are established men and women with families and careers and in some cases political and corporate influence. Hip Hoppers span a wide demographic now. We are at the minimum between the ages of 10 to 50. No one was out there to support our culture except Kurtis Blow and me? I guess these are the breaks.

This was disheartening because when we speak about Hip-Hop, it is less a culture we are speaking about in some instances but a time span that we have had the opportunity to live in. Even if you never tried to break dance or write graffiti you and your life and the people around you have been greatly influence by this music and culture. It has shaped your means of communication, your fashion, and in some cases your very values systems. So it is sad that we could not be bothered to represent ourselves and our interest.

I am also looking at who exactly was organizing this march. And to be honest, it was pitiful. It was a throng of upwards of 300 people who were the most clearly out of touch individuals on the planet. The type of people who go outside and yell at the unruly kids on the block while their son is smoking crack behind the building and their daughter is the neighborhood whore. A group of people more interested in controlling people than understanding them.

When are we going to retire these so called Black leaders? These leaders that lead us further into embarrassment. These leaders that are still trying to use outdated and ineffective Civil Rights techniques in this day and age. Who pragmatically clutch to the "old ways " and old glory refusing to acknowledge much less uplift new leaders and new guards for our and their futures.

I mean think about it... they do it in sports it is called recruiting, they go out and find athletes that they believe can further a great sports program. In the corporate world they find a young executive and develop this protege to be able to continue the vision of the company and lead it into the future with an influx of new ideas and an understand of the future. I could cite this in almost any institution that involves a hierarchy of men and women grouped to accomplish a goal of some sort.

But not so for the Black community. Our leaders remain the same leaders from 1960 in 2007. It is laughable.

And finally I am looking at who they were marching against. What is the point of marching from record label to record label? Especially after you (Reverend Al Sharpton) promoted this march on HOT 97... on the Miss Jones in the morning show... what an irony. Rev. Al promoted a decency march on Miss Jones' morning radio show. Then he went on the Ed Lover show on Power 105.1 Never once did he hold them, their shows, their stations, program directors accountable for playing this filth.

At some point DJ Scratch of EPMD fame called the station (power 105.1) and insinuated that the radio should be accountable too. Ed Lover retorted, "Oh it's our fault now? "

Oprah Winfrey had the gall to have a two-day discussion based on this issue. But lest we forget that Oprah has the unique ability to be able to place anyone on her show to promote a product Idea or book and that person will achieve great success. In fact she had a straight liar on her show who promoted a book full of lies about his drug addicted life. He made it to the best sellers list as a result of his Oprah appearance. Why couldn't she just as soon highlight Hip-Hop artist that are making music that respects women and the culture? Imagine what these record labels would do if they knew that if they had a positive artist that he might get a shot at some Oprah time? An artist that could sell to an Oprah crowd...think about it.

Imagine instead of marching and wasting valuable action initiative energy think if Al Sharpton mobilized his following to go out to retail stores and purchase a CD from a list of positive artist. He would have been more effective that any of this marching will ever be.

Seeing as how in this day Hip Hoppers like to identify to the criminal element.. let me break it down in that language..

Hip Hoppers, teens, Black men, you're being played as a "patsy." That means you are getting framed to take the fall for something someone else said or did.

There is a 300lb Gorilla in the room drinking tea and crumpets pointing the finger at a little black boy for taking up all the space in the room.

A very interesting and scary time is upon us. We need to get our head on a swivel and start looking at what is going on around us. I suggest that some of us start playing chess so we can start seeing a few moves ahead. There is a big joke being told and we look to be on the business end of its punch line. We'd better wake up fast and get mobilized and start speaking up. Lest we leave our future in the hands of Rev. Al Sharpton and the like.

Hip-Hop, stand up or just sit down and shut up.

IMUS/SHARPTON/ROMNEY

Posted by: dottie042 at 2007-05-09

Imus/Sharpton/Romney I just want to say what a hypocrit "Mr." Sharpton is I don't give him the respect of Reverend, as he doesn't deserve that honored title. This morning he reportedly stated that the one Mormon running for President, obviously, Mitt Romney, will be defeated as "we will vote for a person who believes in God..." what hypocrisy!! Mormons are probably more devoted and do God-like works than any other denomination!!! How dare Mr. Sharpton make such a stupid comment! There are almost 13 MILLION Mormons & many millions who are good friends of Mormons who will fight you over this rediculous statement -- "Mr." Sharpton!!! You are so disgusting, I can't believe you couldn't forgive Imus when you are far worse than he is!!! In God we trust!!! Who do you trust Sharpton???

You'll probably delete this because you think you are the only one right
you OWE Mormons an apology, especiall the honorable God-believing, Mitt Romney!!! Hopefully, Mr. Romney will be the next president of these United States and Mr. Sharpton will get a job as a trash worker!!!

Bigot and Hypocrite

Posted by: daven at 2007-05-10

I recently saw the report on the news about the comments Al Sharpton made about Mitt Romney and the mormon religion. After watching the Imus fiasco and Al Sharpton denounce the words that were said by Imus. Now, after having watched what Sharpton said about Mitt Romney and mormons, the first word that comes to my mind is HYPOCRITE! To be frank, I'm disgusted by Al Sharpton's actions. One who supposedly holds himself to a higher standard than all of us should act differently rather than demonstrate bigotry to the entire U.S. His irreprehensible behavior and lack of apology are disgusting!! America needs people to stand up and take responsibility for wrong actions rather than rationalize and justify wrong actions. One whose career is entirely based on creating equality such as the career of Al Sharpton has become a mockery when the spokesman himself is a hypocrite. I believe Al Sharpton owes an apology to Mitt Romney and the Mormon religion. Absolutely, disgusting the someone who preaches equality could act as such a blatant bigot!!

Hate Monger!

Posted by: jdemille at 2007-05-18

Al Sharpton is a disgusting liberal hate monger who spews hate speech just to churn up controversy for his own political agenda. Instead of just apologizing when he says things like "jewing up the numbers" or referring to Mormons as those who don't believe in God, he simply throws gas on the fire to stir up more controversy and divert attention away from his first screw up. Don Imus screwed up. But, he didin't need to be fired for what he said. It was Sharpton's agenda and the watchdog groups that scour the conservative and otherwise fringe media groups that look for opportunities to remove the symptom. Sharpton doesn't want to fix the race problem in this country. He wants to further it along. Because, without race issues that on most occasions he stirs up in the first place then he's out of job. People in this country need to understand that Sharpton is nothing more than a pariah and should stop thinking he is doing good for the black community. If he really cared for the black community instead of his own political agenda then he would sit down with other special interest groups in real dialogue instead of spewing garbage and hate speech whenever he chooses. Why does he get a pass when he says the mean-spirited stuff that he does? I'll tell you why - because he's black. That gives him the liberty to stand up and talk badly about any other race or culture and nobody jumps on him. Rather, people fear him because of the power he yields to destroy careers. Enough is enough. People need to smarten up and put this guy out of business so that race problems in this country can be finally fixed. Rather than listening to Sharpton, let's try listening to what Bill Cosby and others like him are saying to the black community. Then, let's all sit down and have some real dialogue after people like Sharpton are out of business and can't say hurtful things anymore.

where is Sharpton to answer all the questions here.

Your reply of IN FOR A REASON, NOT FOR A SEASON is a slogan, FORUMADMIN, It is no better than, HERITAGE, NOT HATRED. It is not an answer to all the questions posed to Rev. Sharpton in these replies. How about some real answers????? These are real questions that need to be addressed.
